I was born and raised in Montana and have a genuine passion for nature and the outdoors. I received my Bachelors in Psychology at Montana State University in 2001. I then pursued my Masters of Social Work degree and graduated in 2008 from the University of Montana. This graduate program had a focus on providing a social justice and integrated practitioner perspective. I have an eclectic style that can be tailored to each unique individual. My primary therapeutic methods include Mindfulness Based, Holistic, Exposure, Narrative, Cognitive and Behavioral, Strengths Based & Solution Focused Therapies. Amy provides a non-judgmental and compassionate environment that often helps people feel comfortable. A true passion of mine is structuring therapeutic activities for clients to express, process, increase self-awareness, and de-stress from life’s challenging and developmental experiences. My past work experiences have been in several areas. I have worked in healthcare with the geriatric population, provided school based mental health to kids from grades kindergarten through 12th grade, substance abuse counseling to college aged kids, crisis intervention with the armed forces and a private practice providing therapeutic services to a wide range of people, families and couples that include helping folks who struggle with Mood Disorders, Anxiety Disorders and life transitions/changes.
Ascending Self is a safe place where we will utilize the most effective, science-based, and relationally sound approaches to helping you heal while gaining understanding of self and relationships. If you're looking for a safe place to roll up your sleeves and get to work on understanding yourself in relationship to self, family, friends, and/or loved ones, this is the place. I offer my clients the best professional help with a balance of connection, support, and efficacy.
As a therapist with over a decade of experience, I recognize that taking the first step toward seeking therapy can be difficult, which is why I want to help clients feel comfortable discussing some of life's most challenging topics. As I near the end of my education in Counseling Psychology, I have honed my experience in trauma-informed care. I have experience in working with individuals across the lifespan, but have focused my recent work with adults aged 18+ with extensive trauma and anxiety. I balance empathy with honesty to help clients feel validated, yet challenged. I believe you are the expert on your own life. I don't believe in a one-size-fits-all approach. My role is to provide a safe, nonjudgmental space where we can explore your experiences and goals to create the life you want for yourself. I always start with an introductory session where we will spend the time discussing the challenges that brought you here, outlining your goals, and ensuring my approach aligns with your needs. Along with the initial logistics and administrative details, I will ask questions about your background, previous experiences, and what is currently bringing you distress. You set the pace: you only need to share what you are comfortable with. More importantly, it is equally important that you interview me. You have the floor to ask about my methods or background to ensure we are a great fit.

Hi there! I am a licensed marriage and family therapist in Knoxville who works with college students, young professionals, dating couples, marriages, and families. I provide counseling for both men and women, who need help with: anxiety, depression, stress, new romantic relationships, relational problems, communication, conflict resolution, physical intimacy issues, sexual health concerns, parenting concerns, family dynamics, addictions, career-path decisions, and life transitions. I want to offer compassion and hope for your unique journey. In session, I specialize in emotional and relational growth--helping individuals and couples grow in their interpersonal skills. I facilitate the Prepare/Enrich inventory for premarital couples, and hold a certificate in Christian Sex Therapy to professionally care for issues surrounding sexuality. I value treating clients in a holistic way, and use a variety of researched-based approaches to counseling: family systems, cognitive behavioral therapy, emotionally focused therapy, group therapy, and narrative therapy. I offer a faith-based perspective, while respectfully empowering clients to grow in their own values and interpersonal relationships.
Everyone deserves support, however they arrive — color-coded planner in hand or running five minutes late with coffee spilled down their shirt. Anxious, calm, talkative, quiet, existentially confused — you’re welcome here. The bigger question is really: Am I your kind of therapist? You might read my profile and think, “She gets me,” or, “Why is she so emotionally invested in foxes and axolotls?” Either way, I promise I’m still licensed. I’m an LPC-MHSP, LCPC with over nine years of experience. I mainly work with PTSD, OCD, DV/SA, and BPD. I also see a range of other concerns—because humans are complex, and the universe did not consult the DSM before handing out life experiences. People usually open up more when they don’t feel pressure to perform or deliver a TED Talk about their feelings. Autonomy matters to me. You get to ask questions, collaborate on your treatment, and arrive exactly as you are — glamorously put-together or held together by three bobby pins and sheer willpower. If you need to laugh, cry, swear, or take a strategic pause while your soul hits “buffering,” that’s part of the process. Life gets messy… it's real and unfiltered. *** I schedule by appt so I do not have posted hours. Please just reach out. I am flexible!
